When designing People English’s curriculum for elementary students, we had to look at the goals, characteristics and limitations of typical English learning institutions in Japan. With this, we had to consider the need of the students, parents, teachers and school owners and managers. Some of the challenges faced include;
Only 1 to 2 contact hours per week.
Vayring class sizes.
Varying levels of effort at home.
A need to entertain the students.
A need to find a way to make the students speak.
A need to show measurable success.
A need to encourage and enable studying at home.
A need to give feedback to parents and show where they can help.
Balancing age, experience, maturity, physical and cognitive abilities.
A need to be able to train teachers to an equal standard.
A need to create a consistent level of tuition across all of the classrooms.
A need to keep lesson preparation time to a minimum.
A need to be able to promote your school by easily demonstrating its merits.
